Today, we were thrilled to be able to pull back the curtain as part of Summer Game Fest and share a little bit about what we’ve been up to here at Studio MDHR. Days like this are full of amazing announcements in our industry, so let’s take a moment to recap.

First up: we’re delighted to officially confirm that work has begun on a brand new, hand-animated Cuphead video game! Our talented team is hard at work on this ambitious project, which will take Cuphead and pals on a fresh, exciting journey. There are so many things about this project that have us energized, and in true Studio MDHR fashion, we are pushing ourselves to continue improving on our craft in all areas. Development is still in the early stages, but rest assured that we’ll have lots more to share when the time is right.

But that’s not all! A smaller team here at the studio has been working in secret on something completely different. A project that is a true love letter to the era that inspired us to make video games in the first place…a game called Mighty Cuphead Adventure! This is a true 8-bit action platformer with arcade-quality graphics, amazing sound, and 32 dazzling colours!

With Mighty Cuphead Adventure, we aren’t just taking inspiration from the classics of the 1980s…we’re building the game with the technology of the era. That’s right: the project is programmed in classic Assembly Language and designed with the exacting specifications of the Sega Master System home gaming console in mind. This means that while the game will absolutely be compatible with modern consoles and personal computers, players who want a true blast from the past will be able to experience it on a physical cartridge for the Sega Master System home gaming console. This is not just a retro-style game: it’s a game built from the ground up with all the unique limitations of a 1980s video game studio.
